An intervention meeting scheduled

2007-08-31 07:43:27

Hi all. I haven't posted for some time. My life has been a mess lately and unfortunately it is taking it's toll in my weight loss efforts. I haven't lost anything for several months in fact, I have gained 10 pounds. The time to stop is NOW. I am calling for an intervention meeting. Here is the idea. I want to invite Wanda as she is my bud and she is having the same problems I am and a couple of others to come for the weekend to my house in Louisville November 3-5th. We will eat right, walk, talk, and just get back focused. It is all about living right again. The only cost to you will be food costs. I will supply the bed space. My plan is to meet Friday evening about 6 p.m. for the evening meal and then after that have some walk time and talk time. Find out how we are feeling and why we seem to be off track, etc. I live by the river and we can walk on the riverwalk or through a beautiful park. Basically, I know I need to be surrounded by people who are having
the same struggles I am. Then on Saturday, up for a breakfast of champions that is legal AND good. A little more exercise and more talk. Maybe we can go do a little sight seeing or shopping.....staying the bounds of healthy living. The same on Sunday..........When we seperate from our weekend, we will commit to each other to e-mail or call every day for at least 3 weeks...helping each other to stay on track. Then maybe in 3 weeks or a month, meeting again to do a check and report........Do I have any takers.

The honeymoon is over :-(

2007-08-31 04:59:07

Well, I made it... six months post-op on the 11th. And the scale
hasn't moved in a few weeks. I've been doing what I need to...keeping
my calories between 500-600 and exercising at least 4 times a week.
I've had plateaus but jeesh..this is ridiculous! lol I know I have to
have patience. And, I'm very happy with my loss so far. I have my
official 6th month appointment with Dr. Houston on the 19th. Judgement
day is quickly approaching!

April,

The honeymoon may be over, but the REAL adventures have just begun! Don't give up honey! Keep being good and eventually the plateau will break! I've been on my first real one since JUNE! However, this past week the scales have been showing a 2 lbs loss after all these months! So hang tight!

Steve and Donna,

Just wanted to let you both know I am 8 weeks out and have lost 51 pounds. Dr Dyer is my doctor and I am doing GREAT! Just do everything he tells you and you will do GREAT too!

And Whatever you do drink your fluids. I had to learn the hard way and now I try to average between 80 and 100 ounces per day. The water sure made a difference in how I feel.

Re: Advice needed! Help!

If I were you I would just wait until your surgeon tells you what you
need to do to prepare for the surgery. All surgeons are different in
what they may want you to do to prepare for your surgery. I know I
myself had to go on the liquid diet two weeks prior to the surgery(well
ten days) but then I know people who had to just go liquid a day or
two prior to surgery. So just wait and see what your surgeon tells you
during your meeting. Good Luck!!!

Hi Steve,

I am so excited for you to have a surgery date, I have my consultation date on the 23rd of Oct so you are a few steps ahead of me. Who is doing your surgery? Mine is going to be done by Dr. Dyer. Best wishes for a huge success!!!!!!!!!!

Re: [CMC-WLS] Fibromyalgia

2007-08-29 14:09:10

Hi Donna

There is not really a medicine for the fibromyalgia they treat the symptoms. I am on

cymbalta for the depression, lunesta for the sleep & pain meds. The lunesta worked

very well when I first started but as with all meds I think my body has become

resistant to it. I have been on neurotin in the past.

Re: [CMC-WLS] Advice needed! Help!

2007-08-29 00:48:05

Mike and I didn't have to start a head of time, but we've hear of some CMC folks who did.

Basically... relax! You have to remember that every program is different and that sometimes different folks who are in the same program have to do slightly different things.

I would suggest that you just take it easy and wait until your consult. THEN do whatever your doc says to do.

You're gonna be just fine!!!

Hello everyone...thanks so much for all the good wishes...I am so
excited. I have a surgical consult set up for November 1 and will
schedule my surgery for the middle of December. I have a question
though...I keep reading on Obesity Help that many people have to start
specific regimens up to two months prior to surgery. If this is the
case for me, I need to start anything right now. Did any of you have
to do this? I want to do anything and everything to succeed at this!

Hi Wanda,

I read your comment about your condition and your fibromyalgia and I was wondering what kind of medication they give you for it? I have neuropathy on the left side of my body which is after effects from a stroke 9 years ago. I take neurontin for it but I am alwasys tring to find something that will help better.

wants to carpool, give a shout out as I surely am not the only one
interested if I can cut the costs.

Weight Loss Plateau With Lap Band Surgery

2007-08-28 06:14:13

I had lap band surgery back in April of 2006. My weight is coming off
slowly but, my expectation of myself is to have lost more then what I
have. I have lost 30 lbs. I have now started a physical exercise
program but, last few weeks no weight loss. Could it be that my fat is
changing to muscle and it weighs more? I am not taking in very many
calories and am burning up calories from the exercise program. Am a bit
discouraged. Is it normal to reach plateaus and will the weight
eventually start coming off again? Help!

Re: Lodging

2007-08-27 05:44:09

Hi Steve,
I'll bet if you call the hospital or the Dr's office they might have a
list of those lodgings nearest the hospital. The hospital itself might
even have lodging for families just as St Thomas Hospital does but I am
not familiar enough with Nashville to advise on what areas are safe
areas to stay. I know there is a lady on here I think her name is Jill
who spent some time @ a motel after her surgery, hopefully she is
reading this and can advise you much better than I.
Good Luck sounds like you have everything in order ... isnt it great
when a plan comes together?????

Good to hear from you, Julie

2007-08-25 10:34:34

Hello Julie....It was inspiring to read your story....100 lbs. I can
only say WOWWWWWWWWW. That's AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing it with
us. You have done soooooo well.
Recently, I went to look for some new clothes as my other ones were
baggy. Since I'd gone to the Plus size area for a million years, I
automatically went there. I picked up the smallest size pants in
that section and they were wayyyyy too big. I wanted to tell the
world that I was entering the Missy area...LOOK OUT! I've had a
smile on my face for days now. I know every has or will feel the
very same way.
Keep posting, Julie....we all benefit from each other's experiences
and helpful hints we can share with the group. Take care, have a
great weekend.

Re: Bye y'all

2007-08-25 04:08:50

Trecesa, I was sad to read your email. I know there is a lawyer on
the Obesity website who helps people during these situations. You
might want to check out the site....just a thought.
If you've read my emails, I was approved by my insurance company, UHC
and then denied 2 days after I had surgery. I was recovering in the
hospital when I heard they denied me. That certainly doesn't help a
person's recuperation!!! That made me more determined to get it
taken care of. I filed an appeal and went thru HR where I
work...finally, they paid my claim. But I was like a 'dog with a
bone' and wouldn't take no for an answer.
I wish you well and know that we are all thinking of you. Hugs from
Illinois.....Jilllll

Steve's Surgery Date !!!

2007-08-25 03:47:19

Hi Steve,
I just wanted to say congrats on getting the date set for your
surgery. I was a 'tad bit' apprehensive myself but I knew after over
2 yrs. of research this was the way to go. I hadn't been feeling
good for the last year. I can't begin to tell you how much better I
feel today---55 lbs. lighter (surgery 6/6/06) with 'ONLY' EDG
procedures since then. Dr. Houston said I hold that record. I am off
of all medication, getting back lots of energy and feeling great.
I had additional surgery that day as I had an esophageol hernia which
took longer than the lap rny surgery. I thank God each day for Dr.
Houston and the wonderful gift God gave to him!!! Dr. Houston is the
reason I traveled over 500 miles to have my surgery at Centennial. I
don't regret it for a second.
We ALL will be thinking of you, keeping you and your family in our
prayers before/during and after your surgery. Keep posting and
updating as we care!!!
We'll see you on the much lighter side at the Christmas party on
12/15! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Jilllllll form Illinois

Great News, Cathy!

2007-08-24 12:02:04

I am sooooo happy to read your wonderful news and that you are at the
top of "NORMAL"....I always knew that : ))))
I have a friend who isn't overweight at all and has to use one of
those c-pap 'things'. She is amazed as to how much better she feels
and has tons more energy.
I know how good I felt to be off of all medication...what a super
feeling!
Take care and see you in December! As always hugs from Illinois,

I have had a lot of fun here but I feel a little out of place. My insurance company denied me for the surgery and unless I win the Powerball my hopes of having this surgery is next to nil. A Question

2007-08-23 17:17:18

I wanted to spruce up my website and sent an email to ObesityHelp.com.
I received a reply saying they are no longer providing the volunteer
service.
My question is: I was wondering if anyone knew of another
group/individual who would do this type of service?
They did put a few pictures on my website for me...they start with
6/4/06, the day I left for Nashville to have my surgery on 6/6/06 and
each month thereafter. I was happy they were able to do that for me.
It's such a neat feeling to see the changes I've experienced in such a
short time. I am blessed!!!

Re: A Question

2007-08-23 16:53:30

Hello Jill, I am a little confused about what you are trying to do?
Are you just trying to update your profile on the OH site? If so
then all you have to do is go into your profile and on the left side
it gives you the choice to update your profile. If you want to put
pictures in it the best way to do it would be to use a photo hosting
type of site (photobucket) this way you can get the code that you
need in order to put the picture up on your OH site page. I hope
this helps & I hope this is what you are looking for. Kim

A Wild Experience!

2007-08-23 10:55:45

Hello everyone...I thought the caption would get your attention. I
had my very first and hopefully last 'dumping' syndrome experience in
a meeting right after lunch a couple of days ago.
I was in a small conference room with my boss and a couple other
employees, when I started to feel wierd, the back of my hair got so
wet/sweaty and I felt like my blood sugar was taking an elevator ride
to my toes. As I said...what a wild experience. I can't say for
sure how long it lasted but it felt like quite some time.
When I got out of the meeting, I called Dr. Houston's office and
talked to Andrea (who is a true joy). She said Dr. Houston was with
a patient and he'd get back to me. Sure enough he did, but for some
reason his call didn't get thru to me so he left a message. This was
on Tuesday afternoon. I didn't get the message until that evening,
BUT first thing on Wed. morning there was a call from Andrea checking
on me. Then Dr. Houston called again. He asked me what I ate for
lunch. I said turkey...he said AND...I said peas...he said AND...I
said applesauce. He said it was the applesauce which caused my hair
raising excitement!!!!! I can't say enough kind words about Dr.
Houston and his office staff....what a super group of caring
people!!! God put all of them there for a reason.
I'll sign off for now as I think I am writing a book but I just
wanted to share this 'experience' with the group.
Wishing everyone a great evening....we're having beautiful fall
weather here in Central Illinois.....Hugs, Jilllllllllll

Carol Anne! Welcome! My hubby Mike and I are so excited for you and your surgery day!

I, too, was in school full time when I had my surgery. Now, i was on Christmas break when I had mine, but I was back to all my regular activties (slowly of course!) within days of surgery. I got out on a Thursday and traveled to my parent's house on Saturday for Christmas. I was back in the orchestra at church the next day! I was tired, yes. I had to be careful about what I picked up, yes. But honestly, it wasn't any harder getting around than it was before surgery at 420lbs!!!

When I went back to school, I replaced my backpack with one that rolls. As quickly as you're going back to school, you might want to consider that. Text books are HEAVY!!!

trotting around campus was so much easier that next sememster as the weight dropped off. You're life will never be the same!

Re: [CMC-WLS] feeling "stuck"

Stace,

Although I am a RNY and not a band, I can't say for 100% sure what's going on. However, I encourage anyone with food questions to call the dietician. I'm sure they'll be able to guide you.

However, I do know what it's like to fight the post-surgery food battle. Reading your post, I think already know what the problem is. You said, "I'm relaxing somewhat on my eating and scared that I'm doing too much...." That may be it right there. If you are not following the plan, your weightloss will slow or stop... no matter which procedure you had.

Don't be discouraged. You are aware of your problem and are reaching out. You'll get back on track... you've come too far to go back now!

Blessings, Cathy

happening to me. I was banded on 7-27-06 and now I've lost about 30
lbs but now I'm "stuck" I have not had a fill yet, but am scheduled
for one on Oct. 10th. Is this normal? I'm relaxing somewhat on my
eating and scared that I'm doing too much, it just seems like I'm so
hungry now. I'm trying to stay focused but my life is full of lots of
things to focus on and weight loss is only a part of that. I do make
it a top priority, but other things have come up and "my plate is
full". Does anyone have any words of encouragement or advie? Is this
normal to feel this way?

2007-08-20 12:49:04

I've heard of people speaking of the plataeus, this is probably what is
happening to me.

I have a surgery date!

2007-08-20 04:50:37

Sorry I haven't posted sooner but I do have a surgery date. October 25.
I had posted earlier my concerns about getting my surgery done before
the plant I work at gets sold forcing me to start the process all over.
I got an email telling to contact them after they heard about it and
they were very helpful.
Thanks to my silent friend.

Re: Look At YOU!!!!!

Thank you so much Jill! This has been a true blessing, not the
easiest but a blessing indeed. I'm so thankful that I had this
opportunity.

Hi Frankie....

2007-08-18 21:02:09

I am soooo happy to hear that your surgery went well and you are
on the LOSING SIDE....isn't it wonderful!!!!!
You are well on your way. I found the first weeks a tad bit stressful
having the foods I loved taken away from me. There was 'some'
frustration for me when Jim would make himself these wonderful meals
and I'd have my chicken broth and then my sugar-free jello....WOWWWW.
I wanted to make him eat in the closet : ))))
Frankie, take care of yourself, keep posting as we love to read how you
are progressing. I am sending good thoughts your way. WE ARE ALL HERE
TO HELP EACH OTHER ON THIS JOURNEY.
Hugs from Illinois,
Jillllllllll

Look At YOU!!!!!

You are doing sooooo well. It's wonderful to see the big new smile
on your face especially in the last pic. Keep up the good work, you
are a true LOSER...and isn't it great!
Hugs,

FINALLY POST-OP

2007-08-17 21:28:41

Hi Everyone,

Just got home from centennial. I had my surgery on Monday 9-25. I am surprised that I haven't had any type of pain what so ever. I just feel like I have did 1000 sit ups. The surgery wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be. I am so excited to finally have this behind me so that I can finally get on the losing side. Thanks to everyone for all the support that you have shown me

Thanks Again

Hello,

I am Judy Anthony, 56, and I live in Greenbrier, TN (Robertson County). I have 3 children and 3 Grandchildren with another on the way in January. I had surgery 08-15-06. Dr Dyer was my surgeon. I would choose him again and certainly do the surgery again. I have lost 40 pounds and I have stopped 3 pills and decreased another. I know I have a long way to go but I have already made the first steps.

Hey y'all!
I'm almost 6 months out from surgery. I've been taken monthly pictures
of my weight loss progression. If anyone is interested in the
transformation, I created a photo album here on this group page. I
still can't believe the transformation!
Y'all take care!

Thank you so much for welcoming me to this group. I attended another
support group meeting today for Rutherford County held at Stonecrest
Hospital and met some really nice people there. Met Cathy & Mike
Spencer who were co-hosting meeting. What an amazing story theirs is,
having both had the surgery. They are a true inspiration to anyone
who want to look into having the surgery done. It was a really
informative meeting and my husband is feeling better now I think for
going to these meetings as I am myself. Its not so scary now to us.
I am totally willing to committ to this procedure and a successful
outcome.

Happy Saturday Everyone....
I just thought I'd add to the great idea of the Roll Call by our head
cheerleader, Cathy Spencer!
I live in Central Illinois and work in engineering for the largest
earthmoving company in the world...and I feel very fortunate to have
this opportunity.
I had my laproscopic rny, plus esophageol hernia surgery on 6/6/06
with Dr. Houston (I thought that was an 'interesting' date for
surgery). I chose to go to Dr. Houston after the initial
consultation. It was a big decision as Nashville is a 7hrs. drive
from here. He spent so much time with me during the first
appointment, made sure I understood everything and I liked his 'track
record'!! I can't say enough kind words about him, Holly, Andrea,
Kathy and Tonya plus, the entire rest of the group. To date,
I've lost 51.5 lbs. and I've had 4 EDG procedures since my original
surgery. For me 4 was the charm! Thank God food is staying down and
all is well since my last one on 9/8 performed by Dr. Lewis in
Nashville. He's terrific too!
I live in a town of 15,000 with a very special man named Jim.
He's a joy and sooooo supportive through this and everything in our
lives. He's transplanted from Phoenix, AZ and loves Illinois. Yes, I,
too that is strange : ) Between us we have 6 sons and 9
grandchildren. I was a foster parent to 15 babies and 9 older
children. That was such a rewarding experience and one I'll cherish
forever.
We have such a wonderful group of friends and a loving/caring family
who have also supported me thru this journey. I enjoy traveling (I'll
go anywhere/anytime!), decorating, gardening and relaxing by a
beautiful Koi pond in our backyard...AND I should say
exercising...shouldn't I : )))
I will be attending the CMC Christmas party in Nashville on Friday,
Dec. 15 and I hope you will be there, too. I am looking forward to
meeting the people who have posted on this website and who have
corresponded with me. Keep posting as it's great to hear from you as
you share your ideas and give encouragement.
Take care and know that I am sending lots of good wishes to each and

RE: [CMC-WLS] Mens Experiences

2007-08-14 16:52:09

Hey Steve,

My Name is Greg. I had the Surgery Done on August 10, 2005. My Beginning weight was at 350 pounds. I am now at 215 puonds, just over 1 year out. If I had it to do all over again, I definitely would!! I did it for my health, and for the sake of being able to live a long life with my wife and little girl. I have been able to do things with my family that I never dreamed possible. Most of the time my 6 year old will get tired before I do. My Quality of life has changed 100% for the better. I was a ticking time bomb and this saved my Life. The entire team at the CMC Center for the Treatment of Obesity are all Guardian Angels in my book. Dr. Dyer is my Surgeon, and I can't sing his praises enough!!! God bless and guide you on your decisions.

Greg.

Well, the best thing would be to call Holly who does the scheduling and get an estimate from her.

When my hubby Mike went in for his consult, he left with a surgery date. And when I finally got approved, I was able to get a date close to Mike's.

Good Luck!

This is my 1st post but I have been reading the forum for a little
while. I just got notification that my surgery has been approved after
the 6 months medically supervised diet thing. I have a consultation
scheduled with Dr. Houston mid October. Can anybody give me an idea how
far I probably am from surgery? The plant I work at is up for sale so I
am hoping to get this done before new owners take it because I would
probably have to start over with a new insurance company. Thanks for any
info.

Just wanted to post a hello, my name is Kim & I WLS on 7/11/06 by Dr.
Dyer.( THE BEST!!!! :) ) I am "officially" down 48 pounds.(That was
on 9/5/06 I only go by weigh ins that Robin gives me, but my scale at
home now says that I am down just about 60 pounds.) I feel like I
have been through so much in the short 2 months since surgery, being
readmitted for severe dehydration, a small ulcer was found & then on
Labor day morning went to the E.R. and found out that I had a small
kidney stone; between all of that I have been getting common colds off
& on. I KNOW there are others out there that have been through SOOOO
much more than what I have been through, but it seems like things will
never end, and anytime something is wrong I feel like my husband is so
fed up with things going on with me.
I am looking so forward to getting to know others who have had WLS in
addition to the obesity help web site that I go to also and find more
and more people who are going through the same things as I am & where
we can ALL understand one another! HUGS to ALL! Kim ;)

I am 63 years old am 5'4" weigh 265 approximately. Have attended

they were so informative and helpful with questions. I would love any
information on others progress with the Gastric Bypass Surgery. When
I have mine I would like to start a support group in Manchester, Tn
area. I am going to attend training class to do so on November 11th.
So if you are in my area and I get a group started, PLEASE feel
WELCOME to attend. Can you tell how excited I am to have this done??
My regular email is jangles3@blomand.net. I have been like a yoyo as
far as weight goes since I started having children. What did me in
was when I had a stroke after gall bladder surgery. Had to learn how
to walk again and still suffer from neuropathy on left side. So no
matter how little I eat I couldn't exercise so the weight piled on.
Now 7 years later I am ready for this, I only found out Medicare will
pay for this for me. What a blessing. Looking forward to hearing from
you.

Congradulations on your approval.
You might try calling the dr's office and see if they will schedule
your surgery now, prior to the consultation. They may just do that for
you if you explain the reasoning behind the request.
While Dr Dyer was my surgeon, all of them, as well as their staff go
out of their way to be helpful to us.
Just a suggestion
Good Luck, Keep us posted.

Kim ;)

Introduction and question

2007-08-08 20:09:38

Hi All,
This is my 1st post but I have been reading the forum for a little
Thanks for any
info.

Re: Hair Loss!!

2007-08-08 17:39:30

Hello,
I have come to the conclusion that hair loss is a given. I thought I
had lucked out as I passed the 6month mark without any hair
loss ........weeelll now I am 9 month out and loss started around the
8th month. While I loved my hair too and it is really really thin
now, it is a small price to pay for feeling great, feeling better
about myself, and looking great just adds the ice to the cake. I wear
a hair piece that I got through Paula Something or anothers catalog,
the match is almost perfect. It is little change since I wore my hair
pulled back anyway.
I use Nioxin cleanser and Nioxin conditioner which seems to help and
there is new hair growing around my scalp line.
I have been told that it is a result of rapid weight loss and adding
additional protein might help.
I have also purchased 2 wigs, all the same color, but it hasa been
way to hot here in southern middle tn. for them.
The hair pieces are so much easier since I swim at least 3 times a
week. Saves on the setting and styling also. :-}... I dont look like
a wet rat when I get out of the pool, just pull it back set the hair
piece and off to lunch with a friend looking like I just came out of
the beauty parlor. Sounds good to me.
I had by-pass 12/14/05 and have lost 123# as of this a.m.
Glad to hear that you are feeling better and it only gets better frm
here!
Love,
Snow

Re: [CMC-WLS] starting with food

Judy,

I too was banded about 3 months ago (7-27-06). I preferred most fish over chicken, because it seemed to go down easier. Also, I bought the canned chicken breast at Sam's Club (Member's Mark) and mixed it with Hellman's Low Fat Mayo or FF salad dressing and made a chicken salad. That's not bad. I prefer salmon over tuna and I do the same thing with the salmon. Low Fat string cheese are great. Just remember to eat slowly and CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!! Who is your doctor? Mine is Dr. Olsen. He is very cautious about the way and the foods that he recommends. oh, also, eggs with a little salad dressing in them is very good too.

hope this helps

Hello,
Thank you for this list serve. I read every entry and almost everytime
learn something and or gain encouragement.
And today I need both. I am 1 month out today and am having trouble
getting the food and fluids I need. ("I am mechanically ok") I will
eat and drink but wondered if you could give me suggestions on foods
that are easier to eat than others and or ideas on how to fix foods?
Food that is dry is my hardest challenge. Fat free mayo does not seem
to help do you have other ideas? I really would appreciate any and all
ideas!

Re: [CMC-WLS] Hair Loss!!

Hi Jill...sometimes the hair loss is just part of it regardless of what we do. When

mine started to come out I was told to make sure I was taking the coreomega or

eating plenty of tuna or salmon. In addition I starting using Nioxin hair products

both the shampoo and the conditioner. I also did not use any chemicals on my

hair such as perms or color for almost a year. Mine is actually thicker now

than before I lost the weight.

Good luck and so glad you got a good report.

Hair Loss!!

2007-08-07 18:13:49

Hello Everyone....I was in Nashville for my 3 mos. checkup last Friday
and stayed with friends for the weekend. Then on Sat. morning I
noticed hair in the bathroom sink. What timing!!! I had such a good
dr. report, starting to have some energy after my 4th EDG with Dr.
Lewis. Now I am feeling a little discouraged after seeing this hair
situation. I like my hair!!!!!!!!!!
I am looking for suggestions on what to do....I was told by the
nutritionist to have my Advantage Protein drink in place of a meal. I
was wondering if I should take more protein and not just have one????
Cathy Spencer: I am sure you have an answer for me....HELP!
I will be anxious to hear from my WL friends! Thanks in advance...we
must take care of each other. Hugs from Illinois....Jilllllll

Re: [CMC-WLS] Roll Call

2007-08-06 16:40:15

Good idea Cathy,
My name is Janie Loyd. I'm pre-op. I'm in the process of doing the 6 month
medically supervised diet program that is required by my insurance. I've finally
started losing some weight. I'll be finished in December. Then hopefully I'll be
able to submit my paperwork to insurance.
I have gained up to 300lbs and have lost 9 pounds so far doing the South Beach
Diet with my husband. Having him do this with me has been a true blessing. We
keep each other honest.
I'm married to my hubby, Mark for 17 yrs this Oct. We have 3 children, 24y/o, 14
y/o and 11y/o. We live in Gallatin, TN. I work full time as a registered nurse.
So glad to be here!!!!

Re: Roll Call

2007-08-06 00:50:35

Hi All, My name is Kathleen Gardner. I had a lap RNY at Centennial
Medical Center, Nashville, TN. by Dr. D. Olsen. Beginning weight was
230 now at 118 with very few problems. Took nine months to reach my
goal weight and now I do fluctuate by about 5 pounds every once in
awhile. My favorite drink is starbucks coffee but not the sweet ones.
(only bold regular) I have a wonderful husband who also has had the
same surgery (two weeks prior to mine)with the same great results so I
must say we are blessed.
We have a daughter 29, 2 grandkids and two foster sons, one that will
be 17 in Nov. and one will be 18 in dec. (usually we have 4 or 5
foster kids)
I am 54 years young.
I live in Western Ky.
We are doing great, would we do it again, yes in a heart beat!
Kathleen

Roll Call

2007-08-05 23:15:15

Morning all!
The WLS Graduate Group (people a year or more out) did a "Roll Call"
of folks... it was nice to learn about the people in the Group, and a
good reminder that I am not alone.
So, I'd like to have a "Roll Call" here! Let's get to know one
another!
My name is Cathy Spencer-My hubby and I both had RNY in December of
2004. He's lost 186 lbs. and I've lost 213 lbs. He's gone from 5X-
6X shirts to mediums. From size 60 pants to size 32. I've gone from
6X-7X or 38W to size 12 tops and size 14 pants. He is
in "maintenance" now; I've got 27 lbs to go!
We've both come off all medication for our hypertension, cholesterol,
metabolic diabetes, edema, and hormone imbalances. Mike is already
off his C-PAP machine (Sleep Apnea GONE!) and I'm getting tested
later this month to see if I can come off mine!
2 years ago, the simple task of grocery shopping took much planning
and hours of time scheduled to haul myself around and have time to
rest frequently. Now Mike and I bike 12-15 miles, 3-6 times a week.
I can breath, walk (at the same time even), sit in a movie theatre
seat, use the non-handicap bathroom stall, take stairs, ride the
rides at an amusement park, buy clothes anywhere instead at specialty
shops oh the list goes on and on.
Basically, we're both healthier and more active than we've ever been
in our lives.
WLS save my life. It not only improved the QUANTITY of my life by
the QUALITY of my life is out of this world.
Was making this decision easy? No. Would I do it again? Most
definitely! I will never regret this decision. I have my life
back.

Re: Pre-op dieter

2007-08-03 19:58:45

Hi to All,
While BC/BS of Tn requires 6mos of dr monitored weight loss, 6 mos of
a diet group i.e Weight Watchers, in the last 24 months as well as a
visit/evaluation from Dr Frye. If you have attempts documented go for
it. I did WW on line; had a computer crash with all info but sent
ins. company copies of my credit card debts to prove the
weekly/monthly dues... I also stated that the last dr I went to was
Dr Feldman(famous for phen-phen)years ago and wasnt willing to do
that again. Dr's and pills only work while you are going to them or
taking them and it's not a life long change in life style. I also
include a daily diary over afew months with all the weight issues
that happen to me throughout a "normal" day. My diary include the
last straw when I had to have someone else help me get my pants over
my big behind after water aerobics and how that made me feel.I didnt
know this woman and cried all the way home.I added a letter from my
former employer who stated that my weight; she believed, was a direct
cause of my going from fulltime to partime to no longer able to work.
It took only 3 days for me to be approved for surgery once the Ins.
company had all this info. DO NOT GIVE UP TRY AGAIN AND AGAIN IF
NECESSARY!
Wanda you told me early on that I shoudl be glad about nothing
tasting good and not ever being hungry that somewhere around 6 months
things would change ........ your were right ...... but the fear of
going back to a place that made my life and myself so unhappy is what
keeps me going.
My paperwork from Dr, Dyer doesnt say we cant eat pasta & bread, what
it says(if I am reading it right) is that we shouldnt be doing it
till at least a yr out & have reached goal and on a limited basis. I
am 9 months out now and am able to eat beef(limited) quanity, pizza(1
slice instead of a 1/2 or 2/4 of a pie)
and can even eat ice cream in small amounts. Seems to me that it is
all about balance. While I have to admit that I am not loosing as
fast as I had been I am only 15# from goal, have lost 120# so far
wear a size 12-14.
I am by no means advocating that you "cheat" if you look at this as a
diet and not a life style change decision I dont know about anyone
else but I would FAIL as I hate to diet.
But I do LOVE how I feel(no more meds)no more sleep apnea, I LOVE
buying things off the rack and not in speciality stores and most of
all I LOVE THE NEW ME. Think of yourself first and formost and the
rest will all hopefully fall into place. We are all here to help.
You have come this far I am sure you can do it.
Love and Prayers,
Snow

Re: [CMC-WLS] Pre-op dieter

2007-08-03 16:13:40

Hang in there Janie. I know what you are going thru, I just completed my 6 mos. and I didn't have much success at losing weight until I was finally approved by my insurance. You need to find a diet that works for you. If you prefer protein then you need to try an atkins type diet. Ive been on this type of diet for the last month and have lost approximately 20 lbs. I go for my pre-op on the 11th and have my surgery on the 25th of this month. I struggled with the same problems that you are having. After I met with Dr. Houston for my consultation, he explained that a person that is considering the surgery needs to be careful and not gain weight up to the point of surgery because it makes your liver enlarged and causes the surgery to be more difficult.

This surgery doesn't mean that you will never enjoy your favorite foods ever again. It is a means to help you control the amount that you can eat at one time. At first, you might have to do without them, but eventually you will be able to try a little of them again to curb the craving for them.

I have been reading the book and trying to go ahead and give up some of the things that I wont be allowed to have a little at a time so that it is not such an all of a sudden shock to my system. For instance I know that I wont be allowed carbonated beverages and sugar after my surgery. Even thou I was already drinking diet sodas instead of regular ones, I went ahead and gave the diet sodas up and opted for crystal lite and sugar free koolaid. After about 3 weeks I tried to drink a soda and couldn't stand it again. I try to eat something sweet since I have went to sugar free stuff and the real sugar stuff doesn't even taste good any more.

I know that it sounds like a lot of hard work, but if you try to give up one thing at a time and replace it with something else, once you to eat what you originally liked it no longer tastes good.

Instead of thinking of this as some type of punishment to yourself, you need to try and retrain your body to what it really enjoys.

I promise you if you will try this approach of giving up one thing at a time, it will be much easer that giving up everything all at once. My thoughts are with you, I know where you are at because I was there just a few months ago.

Oh my goodness the issues I have! I am 2 months into my medically
supervised diet. I've got 4 more to go. I've had a tough time, I
suppose because I've realized that I may never see my favorite foods
again! After I go to the grocery, I'm going to try to do South Beach
with my husband. I've really been mad that I can't eat what I want.
I've been really struggling and I didn't realize that's how I felt
until I began facing what having surgery meant. Therefore, I'm going to
focus on losing the weight instead of the surgery. I would ask for your
prayers. I'm really frustrated but want to get on the other side of
this frustration. Any words of encouragement would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Janie

Your Pics

Hi Emily,
I took a look at your pics and you look great! Your family ones are so
nice. Keep up the good work. I take my picture on the 4th of each
month and I am absolutely amazed at the changes. I thought I would post
my pics when I can figure out how do it it : ))) I traveled to
Nashville on 6/4 for my surgery on 6/6 and haven't regretted it for a
moment, although I've had a few setbacks because of 4 EDG procedures
but the one on this Friday will be my last...that's the power of
positive thinking. Take care and I wish you a great day.

Thanks, Frankie!

Hey Frankie....thanks for that 'BIG OL' KY Hug' and the encouraging
words. I, too, am hoping this is the last procedure. The episodes
of not being able to keep food down are getting further and further
so that certainly makes me one happy person.
I hope you are doing well and keep posting. It's great to hear from
everyone.

Have you visited the Lincoln museum? It's suppose to be very nice.
We are planning to go there one day soon.

It's been quiet again on this website as I trust most are enjoying the
long weekend. I hope you are all doing well.
I will be heading for Nashville on Thurs. to meet with Dr. Houston for
my 3 month checkup. I will have another EDG procedure Friday morning
with Dr. Lewis. This will ONLY be my 4th one and I am proclaiming
it'll be my LAST one. Then Dr. Houston's appt. at 1:15pm on Friday. I
am really looking forward to seeing him an
