I'm Janice, from California, I'm still deciding if I want to do the

base in Kingsland, and my son is a JAX I think that's what it's
called in Jacksonville.. he is being transferred to Travis Airforce

with the Navy. He's a Lt jg. I was in Kingsland in November.

Hey!! My friend (& room mate), Lindsey, has set up an eBay store that has a TON of Estee Lauder & Clinique cosmetics - as well as some nice perfume & cologne. If you are looking for something for yourself or a gift, check her store out at www.sokycosmetics.org. It's all new stuff and a good buy! Pass this around to anyone you think might be interested. I'm hoping if I drum up some good business for her, she'll cut me a deal on my rent!! ha! (Just kidding Linds!)

Anyway, check it out & pass it around!

this is a link for the Yeast,
http://www.efn.org/~sundance/NutritionalYeast.html, I don't recoment putting
it on pop corn but the mac and "cheese" is good. Idose not taste like chees
but it is good. It has all kinds of benifits and kills fleas!!! I about died
when I read that. I add the yeast to pancake mix. The cheapest I have found
is by twin labs.
http://www.vitacost.com/Store/Products/ProductDescription.cfmSKUNumber=02743
4011051 I find it tastless in most stuff in regular amounts.
Nutritional yeast and brewers yeat are almost the same but brewers yeast is
really bitter becouse it is the left overs of making beer, and I really
dislike it.
I will still use it after I go back to eating meat postop for the benifits.

Yes, It went fine thank you. There were a lot of
people there. I am trying to get all my medical
records together now for some of my diet attempts
history and making an appointment to go see my PCP so
I can get a letter of recommendation from him. That
won't be a problem because he suggested it to me. I'm
hoping to have everything faxed back to the doc by
Monday the 15th. Another girl that use to work here
had the surgery done by Dr. Houston and I don't
believe she had any problems getting approval on her
insurance. I'm trying to make sure I have any and
everything the "Insurance Gurus" might need before I
send it to them.
I was getting very nervous about everything before the
seminar. I don't know why. It's not like they were
going to do it right then and there, but now my nerves
have calmed down and I think I'm pretty much ready
when they give me a date.
FYI, I was sitting here at my desk during my lunch
hour reading my email and laughing my but off at you
and Jill.
Have a great day and thanks for thinking of me!

You were used to the way you had to counter balance cintrifical (sp?) force for the corner. You over corrected, based on the way you used to go around that corner.

It's kind of like when pregnant women lose their balance, or can't judge clearence cause they gained so fast... only in reverse. (YEAH!)

Beth,
Welcome to the group and seeing that we're surgery buds, I had mine on April
23rd. We're about the same in the losing department and I think your doing
great. We have to remember that when we're not losing the weight we are
losing inches. I've gone from a 30/32 (4x) to an 18/20 (XL). My biggest
mistake
was not measuring myself before surgery. I could shoot myself everyday for
not having done that. But seeing the sizes go down and the reactions from
friends and family, lets me know I'm doing ok...lol. Take care and again
welcome to the family.

[Gastric_Bypass_Family] Roll call - Beth

2008-06-21 08:58:52

Hi All,
I am also another Beth to the group.
I just found out about this site from Patty at out support group meeting
last week.
I had my surgery on 22 April 2004 and I live in Groton, Ct.
I am 45 (ok well closer to 46 in April) - smile
I am single and have had no children.
Like others have posted on here I am hoping to have a better life in the
future for myself, I am not happy being alone and want to have that special guy
in my life to be my soul mate and best friend and to do things with and to
grow old with. It is very lonely not having that special someone in your
life.
My weight the day of surgery was 268 pounds and I have lost 91 pounds so far.
I am getting very scared about my eating and the weightloss slowing down as
some other people have mentioned I have the nightmares of waking up and
finding out that I am going to gain the weight back. I am so happy that I had
the
surgery and has been nothing but positive for me. Off all medicines and
exercise 5 days a week at the gym at work. Even have taken a kickboxing class
and still doing it even though it hurts because my rolls of fat move so much
it is painful. But I would not change a thing and would have the surgery
again in a heart beat! I never seemed to have any self esteem and very bad a
making decisions even small ones on like what to order on a menu. The self
esteem is starting to come back slowly I think hopefully the decision making
will
get better in time as I lose more weight also. I just can't get over the
fear that I might be eating too much or the wrong foods even though I still
don't eat any where as much as I did before surgery. I almost have anxiety
attacks worrying about the weight coming back on. It seems like everyone that
posts that has had the surgery around my time has lost so much more weight than
myself and I keep thinking that I will be a failure at this surgery like I
have been a failure on all those diets I have been on in the past.
Sorry so long, the weather must be getting to me, I guess I am using you
folks for venting - hope you all don't mind, but you all seem so friendly,
helpful and full of so much useful information.
If anyone has any questions or comments please feel free to email me back -
smile
Have a blessed day and God Bless!

My name is Linda. I live in Ocean County, New Jersey. I had my surgery
10/14/03 by Dr Alexander Abkin at Morristown Memorial Hospital. I'm 5'8", I
started at 260 lbs. My goal was to lose 100 lbs. I've lost 80 lbs. and I'm
struggling with the last 20. I guess I got kinda cocky after losing 80 lbs. and
havent been real good with my food choices. I'm trying to get back on track.
It
helps reading about everyone on here. I also joined a fitness club that has
a pool, but havent been too good at getting there. Please, Someone, Smack
me!! LOL
This is great group, lets keep each other in line.

Re: Family Member Roll-call

Hey Family,
I will start this roll-call if no one elses beats me to it. I had
surgery 9/7/2004, Lap RNY and feel like its the best thing I could
have ever done for myself and my family. Life has been wonderful
and I have lost 80 pounds so far. Started originally at 298 but
lost 20 pounds soon after getting our first two fosterkids and was
278 at surgery. We live in Alabama but will soon be relocating back

Family Member Roll-call

2008-06-18 16:14:30

Hey Family,
We are going to start something new so we can all
introduce/reintroduce ourselves to everyone on this messageboard.
This will hopefully also bring out the lurkers or older family
members on here too. Included in this roll-call we'd like you to
list if your pre-op/post-op, when you had surgery or when your
having surgery and anything else you'd like to add. We all love
hearing about where each of us lives, families and those topic's of
the day. We are also putting all those surgery dates on our
calendar so it will remind us. Hope everyone takes advantage of this
so we can all get to know each other once again.
Hugs, Linda in AL.

Thanks Family!!

2008-06-18 08:34:26

Hey Family,
Just wanted to tell you THANKS for your post responding to my recent
loss. I must tell you its been hard and for some reason I have been
thinking lots of my Dad who passed away 2/18/1991. Guess a death in
your family does bring up memories. I was a "Daddy's Girl" so its
been kind of hard for me. Thanks to Lexapro I am able to deal with
it much better. Once again, thanks for being there for me and also
the support and understanding from all of you is wonderful to have.
Hugs, Linda Lou in AL.

NEW HERE!

2008-06-18 05:55:26

Hi Everyone!
Like Michelle, I am a newbie as well. Nice to meet you Michelle!
I am having my surgery in 9 days in Ocala, Florida with Dr. Jawad. I'm on
the protein drink/one protein meal a day diet until surgery. I'm struggling
with it, but I'm staying firm to do what I have to do to lose this weight.
I went onto the group and saw all of the photos, and they are truly
inspiring. You are all beautiful!
Michelle, I know you will do great. Where are you having your surgery done?

Thank ya darlin'!! :-) You're going to have to prove your friend
wrong! My treadmill has been collecting dust these past few months
only because I have been going to the gym. I was going pretty
consistently before I was having some gallbladder issues at the
beginning of December. But now, being the first of the year and all,
the gym is packed with people and I actually have to wait to use a
machine. So, I've been stirring up the dust bunnies a bit on mine. I
started jogging even. I jogged for 15 minutes this morning without
collapsing a lung. I wouldn't even think about jogging at the gym...
just the thought of someone seeing my hanging belly slap against my
thighs makes me cringe lol Good luck with the treadmill :-) For me,
I hate exercising, I hate going, I hate doing it... but the feeling
afterwards is sooo worth it! You'll feel so much better after your
workout!

Hi Michelle,
I am also new to this site and everyone here is so nice and helpful. I am

information from others who have had the surgery. This site is fantastic
and I have learned so much from everyone here. Good luck with your

I have been reading with interest the picture trail you all keep talking about. I really wish

I had done that. My body image (in my head) never changed so I still did not want to see

myself. I don't even have a picture of myself when I hit my lowest weight of 180. Now I

am back in the 200's and don't have that to look back to to encourage me to get my

butt moving.

You go Jill....burn the miles on that treadmill. Have fun with your girls.

Hi Michelle,
Good luck hon, you are doing the best thing you can for yourself and
your loved ones. Beleive me! I had mine done 2 years ago in march,
and ive lost a little over 150 pounds, im down to 150 now and feel
and look great, you can see my pics under bingoqueeen in the photo
gallery. See how much HAPPIER I am :)The first 4 weeks is not easy,
the mush food sucks, but quite frankly that is the only bad part..
after that its pretty smooth sailing. If you can get creative and
mush up food that you like (btw my favorite mush food was spagetti
and meatballs, omg it was sooo good mushed, and it made me feel like
i was not eating baby food LOL once the month was over, i started
eating everything, slowly and carefully. Had no probs with meat or
anything like that... Food becamne unimportant.. i just had enough
to keep up my strength and eat enough protiens etc.. as the
nutrionist told me, plus all the dam vits they make ya take... You
wil be fine! Ask questions, we are here to help!!! hugs and good
luck.. lisa

I'm the same way...so scared this is all a dream and I'll go to being

with and fought with our bodies and our body image!! And all the diets
we tried... Now...we just lose the weight without hardly working at
it???? Just doesn't seem right does it. I'm trying to stay warm...need
more sweaters lmao Carmen

***April's Opinion is Right on the $$$$****

2008-06-16 01:52:32

Hi April,
In my humble opinion, your early 'not official picture' is just
beautiful and I totally agree with you, my dear. I am soooo very proud
of you! You look like a million bucks and I really mean that.
I have 'the patient' take my pic on the 4th of each month as that's the
date I left for Nashville and I just took one the other day. I am still
amazed at the changes I see. I am so thankful that I have taken
them....it helps encourage me and keeps me going! When I get to
feeling a little out of sorts, I look at the pics of each month and
dust myself off and get my 'littler' butt in gear and moving!!!!!!!
I bought a used treadmill from a girl at work so I am headed downstairs
now where my little girls have been waiting for me. They want to see
me using it. 'The patient' thinks it'll be used for hanging clothes
but I am going to fool him.
Hugs to you for all of your hard work,
Jilllll

A funny Story

2008-06-15 19:33:48

When i was a BIG girl, i used to not be able to sleep well, and stay
up half the night dreaming of how i can become skinny. I used to
pray to God that he would allow me to wake up and POOF i would be
skinny. I prayed and prayed like a dope and of course nothing
happened. I dont know if you all did that or do that, but now that i
AM skinny, i do the opposite. Every morning i run to the bathroom to
look at myself in the mirror and make sure im still skinny LOLOL i
am always afraid the weight will suddenly pile back on and ill be
fat again. Isn't that the silliest thing you all have ever heard LOL
well, i was just wondering if any of you are as foolish as me with
these crazy thoughts... hugs and stay WARM!!!

Re: Weigh In and thoughts

2008-06-15 18:06:23

Woohoo Julie! You did it! That two lbs you lost makes all the
difference in whether you're in onederland or not! So now that you're
there it will boost you to keep on keeping on! That's great!! I'm
learning to just take it one meal at a time. Otherwise, we can drive
ourselves nutty over it. I read your post about where it's a
challenge for you to go the gym like you'd like. I know a few years
ago when I was going to loose weight once and for all, I bought a
pedometer to make me more aware of my activity each day. It help;ed
because when you have a certain goal of steps you think you should be
taking each day, you're aware of it when you start to sit down on the
couch or decide to walk out and get the newspaper, etc. Little
things can add up. (Preachin' to myself here too!) Wed. afternoon
late it was so warm here and I asked for dh to go walk w/me through
the neighborhood. He had some type of upper respiratory things going
on and declined (understandably) but volunteered our dd to go w/me.
(She's 17 and a sr in high school). She wasn't real thrilled with
the idea but gave in. I told her we'd only go 1/2 mile since she
wasn't too enthused about going. Well, once we got going and got to
the 1/2 mile point I told her it was her call if we cont'd or not.
She said "might as well" so we walked the whole mile loop and she
talked non-stop. She said at different times "this is so much better
than the treadmill!" LOL! And, "this isn't so bad once we got
started". And I'm just like her, sometimes it's just getting past
that mental block telling us we don't want to do it - once we do it,
it's not so bad. (Again, preaching to myself!) Keep setting those
goals and you'll get there!
BTW, thanks for your nice comment on my weight loss. Some days it
seems like a dream that I've been blessed to get this much off this
fast.
Have a great rest of the weekend!

Re: 2 Days Left.....

2008-06-15 14:10:03

Good luck Andrea, I also had the last meals, as a matter of fact, i
gained 20 pounds in the last 4 weeks before my surgery, i was SOOOOO
bad eating everything under the sun... i actually didnt even know
when my surgery was to be scheudled, so i was very upset that they
kept putting me off. The reason was my doc was moving from one
hosptial to Johns hopkins and he didnt have any surgery time
scheudled yet, i was 1st on the list, but they coudlsnt tell me
when. So i ate and ate, Teramasu was my FAVORITE, so had tons of
that, bad bad me, and then one thursday, she called me on tuesday
and said.. can you be ready by thursday for surgery, i said WHAT are
you kidding, in 2 days??? SO i spent 2 days getting someone to watch
my baby, packing up, putting the house in order, making out a will,
a million things, never had a second to be nervous!!! then my last
night, hubby ran up to donnas cafe and bought me the hugest piece of
tiramasu LOL , it was soo yummy, the funny thing is, I am almost 2
years out now (march)and i dont care about food like i used to. I
could care less about eating honestly. I hit my goal weight (150)
almost 6 months ago, and have maintained it with no problem. Quite
honestly I thought it was easy. I did as the doc said, and walked 2
miles every dam day and the pounds fell off like clockwork, it was a
real miracle. I still feel that way everyday. GOod luck to you and
may the pounds melt off like snow on a sunny day :)

new to this site...surgery in 3 days

2008-06-15 02:26:14

Hi all!
My name is Michelle and I just found this site. I thought I would
take a minute to post a message. I am getting ready to have my
gastric bypass in just three days. I am very excited, but at the
same time I am scared to death! I have researched it for about a
year before I finally came to the realization that if I didn't have
this surgery I would not live too much longer.
I hope to find some useful information as well as meet some people
who have had the surgery already. I thought I knew all I could knnow
until I met a lady who had it done about 8 years ago. Boy, was I
wrong about knowing what I was about to do!!!!!
Well, I guess I will post this and get packing. 3 days comes really
fast when you have so much to do!
Thanks and hope to talk to you soon,
Michelle

anything I do is working. Does anyone have any idea on what I can try so I can
break this plateau?

I will be participating in this and have the training plan to do these races. If anyone is interested it is so cool. I watched them last year. This year I will be a participant. Hi Andrea,
I had seafood this past Monday - a bunch of us from
church that serve on a team together went out for the
"last dinner" of seafood. I couldn't eat it all.
Anyway, today (to help take my mind off of my upcoming
surgery) I have been recording all of the upcoming
surgeries so that I can pray for them and not think of
mine. My husband and I have also been getting the
apartment cleaned so that I don't have to look at a
dirty apartment when I come home. However our 19 yr
old son will be here alone as my husband will be
staying in the hospital with me so no telling what
condition it will be in when we return.
I will be praying for you on the 25th and after as you
recover quickly. I'll look foward to seeing your
posts when I come home from the hospital.

Julie Williams <jwilliams705resource@...

Hi all, I wanted to share my journal today. I feel like I have fought an emotional thinking battle and actually WON!!!!!

FROM MY JOURNAL!
Today was weigh in day. I was disappointed in how I did but know that I was being unreasonable and should be grateful. My goal for today was "when I had my first weekly weigh in in 2007 to be in the 100's." I MADE IT BY THE SKIN OF MY TEETH....199.8 pounds today. I lost 2 pounds.
My first reaction after the weigh in was I needed to celebrate and head to McDonald's for a Egg McMuffin, Hash Brown, and a couple of parfaits. THANK GOD!!!! In my mind I heard Cathy Spencer saying THAT IS POISON!!! It is 1:36 and I am on track. It feels good that I didn't cave in to my head thinking.

2 Days Left.....

2008-06-11 23:01:07

I've been on my protein shake diet for three days now.
Granted, I've
cheated with carrots, pickles, apples and some broiled
shrimp... but
I've lost 9 lbs of the 10 needed to lose and I have 2 days
left. I did
my week of lasts last week.. funny, Gloria, I had a meal of
bloomin
onion, salad, potato and the smaller portion of Filet
Mignon as well!
Did you go to Outback too? Ha. I've done the Mexican
restaurant, I went
to seafood four nights ago for my final meal and had a
crabcake and some
sushi. My doctor recommended I NOT do the last meal
thing...but I can't
help but having that mentality. How long will it be until I
can have
nachos w/bean from my favorite Mexican restaurant that I
used to attend
almost weekly? I almost found myself crying last night
thinking about
that question. How pathetic I am. I swear. Crying over
food already.
My dad sent me a $100.00 gift card to best buy so I can go
get some
blank dvd's and cd's and a couple new computer games to
keep myself
occupied up til the surgery and to keep me stress free. And
I stocked up
on coloring books and water pastels yesterday. I'm ready to
go! I'm
determined to think about the surgery no more until the
morning of. I
can't believe I'm at 2 days til already. Time flies! Talk
to you all
soon!

Re: [CMC-WLS] Re:Judy A?

Judy glad you are back on track. Awesome about your new grandbaby. Aren't medical advances amazing. My daughter spent time in NICU and I was so amazed at what they could do. Would you like me to put you down for the retreat? Did you get the questionaire? By the way, you can whine anytime you want too, that is what we are for. Cool on the friend. It feels good when people do a double take.
Hey ya'll I am fine I have had a busy Holiday season and met some challenges very well and met some and flopped. I have a new grandson who entered our world a tad bit early and spent his first few days in the NICU. I got to hold him for the first time today. During the holidays I have had the creeping crud stuff with a cough and feeling miserable so I could not even see the new baby much less touch him.
Then when I thought I was getting it together the insurance company called me and told me they were billing me for my surgery costs. Have you ever heard such a thing? I knew the company was not paying the claims like I expected but now they want me to pay them? to cover their mistakes. I have been in the healthcare business for a very long time and been involved with insurance companies but this takes my cake!
Oops sorry I am whinning. I am healthy and I will now count my blessings and you all will be near the top!
Just know every time you post I benefit. I read the group's stuff first and I am excited about the retreat I could use it today.
Thank you for listening!
Judy A
PS I had a wow moment to night. I saw an old friend who I had not seen in a long time. She did not recognize until I spoke and smiled. She wanted to know my secret to this incredible weight loss. I smiled real big then and said Diet by Dyer. I explained and maybe he will have a new patient?

2008-06-10 17:17:51

Taloria,
My dr prescribed a mild mood elevater a few weeks before the surgery. It
really helped. Please do something other than focus on this. Read, needlepoint,
or watch funny movies on TV. Have a relaxing cup of Tea... something. Really, I
was glad I had the mood lift. I do not think I could have done this the way
my cousin did without it. She was misrible, depressed and so stressed out that
she had hives. She also had a bad infection in her wound. I believe that if
she was calmer it would not have happened. Please think about this

the procedure animation it gave me a clearer understanding of the
process. I have been keeping myself occupied with cooking for Jim,

read like crazy for the past week.

Animation of the RNY Procedure

2008-06-09 12:02:52

Hi Family,
I am also filled with anxiety about my surgery which is 8 days away
now and so I have be surfing everywhere to find out as much as I can.
I ran accross this great animation of the procedure and it shows you
what the new pouch looks like etc. I found it very interesting and
thought others might too.
http://www.barixclinics.com/how_it_works/animated_surgery.jsp
It loads slow so you need to be patient.
I am so awful with names, but for the woman that needs to lose 20
pounds prior to surgery, if you can you might want to try the Dr.
Atkins diet. It works pretty quickly, I just got bored and couldn't
stick to it. No bread, carbs, few veggies, lots of meat, cheese,
eggs, fat etc. Don't ask me how or why it works, but it might help
you.
Hugs to all,

GREAT to see your posting, Judy A.

Congrats on the new little grandson and I'm happy to see your posting

You certainly aren't whining about the insurance problems....as we've

Hey, I had tons of problems with UHC, my insurance carrier....but I
wouldn't give up and kept after them. I believe I could honestly say
I AM AN INSURANCE PRO. If you need any help, just let me know. My
insurance approved my surgery and I had an approval letter before I
left for Nashville. Then on the 2nd day of my surgery, I found out
they denied it....it wasn't a fun recuperation time as I was getting
bills and denials right and left from UHC. Needless to say, they
aren't my favorite. I felt like I am an employee of UHC as I was
doing their job.....not fun at all.
I struggled thru Christmas too so it's time to dig in and get back to
basics for me.
Keep posting when you get the chance....we missed you!
Take care and again, so good to hear from you,
Hugs,

***Medical Alert Bracelet***

2008-06-08 17:48:33

Here's some info on the medical alert bracelet. I've ben told you can
get them at Walgreen's and there's a store on every corner : - )))
They'll order it and it come directly to my home.
It says: *Gastric Bypass - No Naso-Gastric Tube*
It'll also have your address on it. It was relatively inexpensive and
came in less than 2 weeks.
Have a simply fabulous weekend!
Still raining in Illinois but better than SNOW!
Love to all,

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Weekend of lasts - Rosebud

2008-06-07 16:54:41

Yeah - I felt a little guilty but not to much because
I lost 25lbs from Dec. 15 to Jan. 13 and I'm now done
with my "lasts" and eating very light even though he
told me I didn't have too. He didn't even require
that I lose any weight before hand it just happen that
between stress and being sick I did. But the pigging
is over now and forever.

Re:Judy A?

2008-06-07 10:21:54

Weekend of lasts

2008-06-07 00:11:32

Hello Ladies and Gents,
It is now snowing and we are suppose to get 10" of
snow so we are hunkered down for the weekend. Surgery
is 5 days away and over the past couple of days I have
been having my "lasts" of some of my favorite things.
Wednesday night we went to "Chipotle" and I had a
Chicken Fajita Burrito - I know it will be a very long
time before I can have one of those again. Thursday
night we had pancakes and I used real maple syrup.
Friday night we went out and I had a bloomin onion,
salad, a sm. filet mignon (usually I get a big one)
and a loaded baked potato. I got some practice of post
op eating,I cut the steak in very small pieces and
chewed it until it couldn't be chewed anymore. I
enjoyed every morsel of it. For dessert we stopped
at Baskin Robbins for my favorite ice cream - Gold
Medal Ribbon. This morning we were hoping to get out
in the morning and stop at Starbucks for my final
"Mocha Valencia Cappucino. - That one didn't happen
because of the weather. Oh well - I guess I can't
have everything.
Even though my doctor told me I didn't have to do
anything special before the surgery like a liquid diet
or give me anything to clean out my system. I decided
that Sunday I would start eating light and doing some
nature things to clean out my system as much as
possible.
Anxiety has definitely been happening this week and
even though I have been very busy at work I find
moments to think about it and feed my anxiety. Those
are some calories I could do without.
We are getting the apartment really clean this
weekend. My husband wants to get an area set-up for
me to do rubber stamping after I get home from the
hospital and am feeling well enough to sit up for a
little while. He figures this will help me with
depression if I am able to stamp which is my favorite
hobby. He has also been stocking up on DVD's that I
like so I can watch them.
Right now is one of my good moments and not anxious,
but he is doing all the work right now so I need to
get up and get moving also. So I'll be reading your
post a little later.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Meds Post Op - Mary

2008-06-06 11:59:12

Well Gloria, they had me off most meds while I was in the hospital. I had to get
back on the antidepressants when I came home....I really need them! Because of
my diabetes, there's protein that spills from my kidneys...that's what the
lisinopril is for. And the lasix is for my BP. I had half my thyroid removed so
I take synthroid. I had a hysterectomy so I take premarin. At one time I think I
had 14 meds going counting the insulin. So I'm down some but all the vitamins
made up for the meds taken off the list. Yes, I thought I'd get to be off most
too, but my regular doc says no. Maybe once I have lost more weight we can try
to go off the lasix. And I don't think I have to be on the premarin for forever
and hopefully I can get off antidepressants at some point too. I honestly don't
know how much of all I take is absorbed and used these days! I just take em as
told. LOL Good luck!

Hi Mary,
I know that each doctor is different with how they do
things but I was a little surprised about all the meds
you're taking. Pre-op I am taking Advandament,
Glipizide (both for diabetics), prevacid, lasix,
tevetin, potassium Chloride, and lipitor, and aspirin.
My doctor has told me I won't be taking any of my
meds at all after the surgery. Which surprised me.
According to him after surgery I will be taking a
chewable multivitamin. Now I'm concerned with what I
hearing from everyone about the iron, b12 and calcuim.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] An intro...

2008-06-02 20:39:16

Hi all,
Just an update ~ I read alot here and take in a lot of information but I
don't post much so most of you don't know me, so this is sort of an intro.
My 24 year old daughter had bypass surgery last September (down 80 lbs since
surgery - 130 lbs since first looking into it). I was hoping to have
surgery with the same surgeon and in December when her surgeon got his
renewal for malpractice for $340,000 he could not afford to pay that much so
I lost my surgeon. I was/am devastated by this as I love this doctor - in
my humble opinion he is one of the best. But life must go on and I
desparately need this surgery myself, so I continued with all the testing
and have finally found and decided on a surgeon. He is Dr. Garth Ballantyne
in Hackensack University Hospital (NJ). His credentials are impeccable and
my daughter's surgeon highly recommended him. He is a bit cocky unlike my
daughter's doc but you can't always have everything and I would rather have
ability if I have to chose over personality. It is just so hard because my
daughter had both. Oh well, this is the way it is.
I have my first consultation with him on 2/15. My gall bladder must come
out - and my daughter's surgeon would have taken it at the same time as the
bypass but this surgeon will not do that. So I am going to my daughter's
surgeon (he got malpractice for general surgery - less costly) for the gall
bladder. The other surgeon said he will do the bypass 6 weeks after the
gall bladder surgery. So I have an appointment to see the doc for the gall
bladder surgery on 1/31 and hope to have this done as soon as possible. I
am on a tight time table as my employer renews our insurance 7/1 and to be
sure that I am covered, I must have this all done prior to that. Now, I
have a leg up as I have had all the testing done that my daughter's doc
required including nutrionist, psych evaluation etc. Dr. Ballantyne said he
would talk to me about what I have had done and go over it all to see if he
would require anything else. He does require a lot more blood work than I
had, so I have to go back to have that done as he requires you to have it on
your first appointment or he will cancel on you. I am praying that is all
he will require me additionally to do. Of course I will probably have to
have another EKG and maybe stress test immediately prior to surgery as there
will be some time passed before I will have surgery with him.
Anyway, just wanted to sort of introduce myself to you all and tell you
where I am in the process. Please everyone say a little prayer for me that
things move ahead quickly so I can be on the other side asap. Oh........my
daughter and I joined a gym and went for our first visit last week - going
back this morning for our second time. We had such fun! Gee - did I say
that? Who'd have guessed!!!!!
Good luck to all of you who will have surgery soon. My thoughts and prayers
are with you.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Carmen- taking it all......

2008-06-02 10:07:23

Hi,
When I was in my mid-twenties(I am OMG!! almost 60 now ~ when did THAT happen~
LOL!) I had ALOT of female problems - lost one ovary and most of the other is
gone. I thought the same thing myself - geez, take it all and relieve me of
this trouble and pain!!!! But my doc - a very very kind and smart guy said
no......I don't want to throw you into the change this early in your life
because you will age more rapidly and bones degenerate faster etc etc. Now at
the time I had no children. He told me that I was 99% unlikely to ever be able
to have children because what I had left - one piece of an ovary and badly
damaged tube would not likely allow me to become pregnant. Well, lucky for me
and thank god to him I was the 1% and had a daughter who is and has been the joy
of my life (now 24, almost 25 and also had the bypass last September). So don't
rush into the take it all thing. I went through the change naturally in my late
40's early 50's. Of course I don't miss that time of month at ALL <grin
sooo glad that I didn't have my way. OH.......and by the way.........NO one
EVER believes I am almost 60!! Think that would not have been had I had it all
out in my twenties. Of course, some is probably genetics, but I do believe that
being thrown into the change that early would age you more rapidly. And taking
hormones for years - well, there is alot of controversy over that as well. I
have never taken them.
Just another side of the coin to think about.
Best of luck to you!

Looking through my herbal sites..I started noticing several that seem to be
benifical to WLS persons....I've always gone herbal over 'traditional'
medicines and have rather healthy :)..now I know Dr's and nutritionist may not
care for any thing 'herbal'..but it is something I will continue to incorperate
into my diet later on...ya'll give this a look-see and offer your ideas or

Re: April....hey you 'little' lurker!!!

2008-06-01 15:23:44

Thanks :-) I can't believe it has been 9 months already! Boy time
sure does fly by! At any rate, I can't wait to get those size 18s..
just remember to let me know how much it'll cost you to send
them..and I mean it!
I too take pictures every month. Most of them are posted in my photo
album here and my profile on Obesityhelp.com. I look at them just
about every day. It is very encouraging. I also have a pair of jeans
I kept from my big girl days. I haven't gotten in them lately though.
I should probably get a pic of me in them! Let me know when you get
your xmas party pics up.. I'd love to see them :-)
Have you talked to your Dr. about getting an iron supplement? Around
my 6 month mark I started to feel really run down and sluggish..sure
enough, my bloodwork came back with low iron. I started taking a
supplement and felt like a new person after about a week and a half.
Plus this rainy weather will make anyone feel the blahs! You take
care of yourself too! Have fun with your granddaughters this weekend!
*hugs*
April

April....hey you 'little' lurker!!!

2008-06-01 13:13:42

It was super to see your email...I've had you on my mind as I am
gathering up the jeans so get ready! I have my little girls this
weekend so they'll help me.
Family 'stuff' is rampant...everywhere.....believe me....but remember
to take care of April. She's #1.
Hey 9th month anniversary....congrats early! I'll say that now
because chances are I'll have a senior moment by then. I would love
to see a new pic of you. You will see a difference!!!! I take a pic
every month on the 4th as that was the day I left Illinois to travel
to Nashville for my surgery on 6/6. It sure helps to look at them
and see the changes each month. I NEED THAT ENCOURAGEMENT!
I have to get my pics up from the party...I've been so bad since
Jim's accident...no time or energy. My iron count is down and I sure
can feel it.
Here's your Illinois hug now,
