Re: [CMC-WLS] exercise

I don't do as much as I should but I average at least
10 to 12 miles a week just outside walking. When I go
to Wally World or any other shopping I always park in
the spot that is the furtherist from the door that way
I am sure to get in a little additonal walking.

HA! I feel the same way Kathy!!!

I try to remind myself that I do not like to go to work, but I do it. Why? because I don't want to starve to death and be homeless.

SO-why do I exercise when I absolutely LOATH it? Because I don't want to relap and be sick from obesity again.

Hi Janie,
Don't give up, it can take a long time to achieve the goal of the
surgery, but you will find a way even if your insurance company gives
you fits the way mine did for 2 years before my surgery. In the end,
we took out a second mortgage on our home and had to self-pay to get

decision to make.
It is so nice to meet so many wonderful people as are gathered here.

Hi Tammy :) From the time I decided I wanted this surgery, to the

long road of tears, anger, and discouragement for me, till at long
last my husband and I took out a second mortgage on our house in
desperation and self-payed to be able to get the surgery done. Even
though I was dying of co-morbidities, my husbands insurance where he
works simply did not cover weight loss treatment.
I have been actually starting to feel so much better in so many
little ways day after day since the surgery as the weight is coming
off. I have alot of hope now, and that keeps me smiling all the time.
I will pray that you will find a way to be able to have your surgery

Now girls, my toes are tingling at the thought of meeting you in Chicago and shopping on Michigan Avenue. I have heard oFila's, the place Janie mentioned. I work with a great guy who I call my brother. John and his wife go to Chicago for the weekend and is always telling me of a new place.

Also, my friends and I have taken the train to there and gone shopping for the day. There are wonderful museums, Navy Pier, Brookfield Zoo....and our dear Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears and the White Sox.

But the shopping is fabulous....simply F A B U L O U S! Wellllll, the bottom line is...let me know when and I'll be there O:) .

Love to all from very very cold and snowy Illinois but I did hear from my friend, Jeff at Caterpillar Financial in downtown Nashville. He said it was cold there too. Do you want me to send you some snowwwww???? Just wondering :x

Hey Amanda!

I love new nurses! You are coming into such a wonderful field (at least I think so). I've been doing this for 20+ years and don't regret going into it a bit! You will have some difficult times where you are thinking "what in the world was I thinking???!?!?!!" to "I can't imagine doing anything else!" It can be rewarding and disappointing at the same time. I'm sure that you've heard all of this before. But yes, you're right. I've heard patients ask nurses, "Why are you telling me to stop smoking when I just saw you out on the smoking deck?". The same goes with weight. But lose the weight for you, my dear! You will feel so much better when working long hours and pounding the floors for 8 to 12 hours. When I was your age and 150lbs lighter, I'd work 12 hours, go out with my friends after work then go back the next day and do it all over again! Of course that was 15 or so years ago. I'm so glad you told me that you are in nursing school! Keep in touch sweetie! If there is ever
any thing I can do for you don't hesitate to ask! Oh yea!

Where are you in school at??

This is for everyone who called and or visited me at the hospital last week. I know Kathy H visited because I actually remember that. My mom said Cathy Spencer and Julie called too I think. The fog of anesthesia and pain killers was overwhelming. Thank you all who called and checked in. It was greatly appreciated.
I am doing much better since I can drink the stage 2 drinks. For some reason, these go down just fine. I have a little more energy since there is actually some calories and some protein going in. Today has been a littler rough because I could not hardly sleep at all last night which is weird because yesterday was the first day I actually stayed up all day without any napping. I stayed up all day so I would sleep more sound at night and actually had one of my worst nights. Go figure.
Anyway, I know things are looking up. I have a little bout with the blahs about once a day. Things will get a lot better by Monday because I go back to school and will be way too busy to even think about anything else. Hopefully, when I go to see Olsen on Thursday for my one week check-up, I will be cleared to carry books : )

Have a great day

Hi Kathleen,
Can you email your home address so that I can attempt to be at the
meeting? Email me at april_lash@... I graduated from WKU so
I know the area pretty well. I had every intention of being at the
planning meeting yesterday but I had some unexpected medical
emergency come up...fortunately, all is well now.
I contacted Julie last night and was handed the task of getting
information from montgomery bell state park. This would be a super
awesome venue; however, they are completely booked through the
summer. Their next available weekend for conference facility use and
sleeping rooms would be the weekend of Aug. 24th. I know that is a
month later than what Julie anticipated. But I went ahead and told
them to hold that weekend and the necessary rooms. We have 14 days
to make a definite decision. But that is just a tidbit of what I
found out... at any rate, I didn't intend to get off on that tangent
but if you could just email me your address... that would be great!

Monday Meeting

Hi all,

Just wanted to tell you all we had a great day yesterday. I met some really wonderful people that I really plan on getting to know better! We did not get all the answers yesterday so hopefully today will be better. Julie has put together some really great stuff for our retreat, I just pray we can get it all to work out. We should know something more by tonight. I personally have been busy all day and was tired last night so that is my reasons for not posting plus seems as if the website has been down again as I do not have much mail. The next meeting will be here in Bowling Green on Saturday Feb 3rd at my house. I' m anxiuos for all my buddies to be here! We did decide on a name which is --------Loosing to Live 2007-------- I think it is great! Hope you have all had a good day. I will be on later tonight.

Re: Faux Magic Bullet

Hi Ginger....if you are a cheapskate then so am I : - ))) I always shop now for my winter clothes and in the fall for my summer clothes....my toes tingle when I get a real bargain. I like being able to go to the nicer stores and get the quality clothes....I suppose at 59, I figure I deserve it..... I guess shopping has always been my enjoyment but I know I am not alone on this one. It's not changed since my surgery ;)

But the only thing I would wonder with the 'faux blender' as you called it, would be if it is strong/sturdy enough to blend ice cubes etc. If it works, I say great! If anyone has tried it, please clue us in.

Wishing you and everyone a great day!

Tofu is always a posibility... and then there's protien powder. (Beans, but there's a lot of fat... not really supposed to eat them.) Spinich is also high in protien.

Can you do dairy products as in shakes??? Cheese? Cottage Cheese? Keefer brand non-dairy soy milk is fortified with protien. 8th Continant or Silk brand soy milk has protien. Eggs.

Hey Liz
Rob is doing great he has lost about 31 lbs now. He
goes to Dr. O. this Friday for his one month check up.
Yes you are so right it is so much easier having him
to
walk this journey with me. We have always done
everything together our PCP was so proud that he
decided that he would have the surgery also. At one
time he wasn't sure he would do it and really didn't
want me to. It took two years for him to finally give
in for me to have the WLS. After he saw how well I was
doing he couldn't wait to have it.
It is so nice that your dh is so supportive but if I
remember correctly he definately did not have a weight
problem so I think it might be a little more difficult
for him to understand some of your emotions but it
will all work out for the best.
Blessings to you

Hi Jill, I always appreciate your 2 cents worth of anything at anytime. [INLINE] I ask Judy mainly because she was the one talking about it and I didn't know what it was. I need to get me one to have for when I have surgery. I'll have to write the name down

and check the next time I go out I'll look for one. That's what I

most appreciate about this group, the people on here are always looking out for one another. [INLINE] And by the way, I don't like to pay full price either. Now if I start looking I'll have enough

time to maybe get a good sale price. [INLINE]

jyllyann1 <jyllyann@...

Tammy, I bought a Magic Bullet and use it often. It's great for smoothies or blending anything, etc. It has two different types of blenders. It's small in size but mighty. You get attachments which are like cups with handles so you don't need to put it in another glass after it's blended. You can do a search online and it'll tell you all about it. It's around $59 for the complete set with a cookbook. Check it out! If I was closer, I'd certainly let you use mine. Many stores have it. I always watch for things to be on sale....I don't like paying full price for anything....it works for me!
I know you were asking Judy but I thought I'd chime in with my 2 cents worth. Judy may have more ideas.

Hey Jilllll! I was thinking of you this morning, wondering if you were snowed in! Glad you are snow-free!

Yes, I'm doing much better. Dr. Houston just gave me a lot to think about. It's a lot of info at one time and I guess you can say I got "spooked"! I did some praying and soul searching for a day or so and I'm feeling much better . I know this is the direction I need to go. My paperwork goes into insurance tomorrow after I see Jill the NUT. I'm a little nervous but thinking positive. Girl, I appreciate your encouragement! I'm so glad that I have such supportive and wonderful friends! Looking forward to March when we can get together!!!

Thanks so much for the incouragement. I read your notes, and decided

Guess what, I will be seeing the DR of friday, 1/26 at 10:15am.
Thank you so much. I haven't really thought about grief counseling
before, I always felt I needed to be strong for my mom, but I think
that might be a good thing to do. You gals/guys are so good for
me. I can't wait to meet you all eye to eye.

Vegetarian Help after RNY Bypass Needed

I am probably the only one in this particular position, but I hoped to
find someone here who had ideas for me. I am a vegetarian and have been
so all my life. I just had my RNY WLS on Dec 19 and had hopes that
someone here might have considered or heard how to do a high protein
diet as a vegetarian.

Re: [CMC-WLS] goal weights?? crazy!

2008-08-17 05:58:19

The have ONE weight per height and don't allow for different builds. I'm "supposed" to weigh 149!!! Ain't happening. My "I'll be content" goal is 195. My surgical goal weight is 180. If I drop to 160, I'll have "normal" BMI.

I'm still striving for surgical goal, but I don't really care if my BMI is "normal." I'm just thankful to be alive and healthy again.

Re: [CMC-WLS] Waiting or approval

2008-08-16 22:19:27

Hey Diane,

MY insurance also required this one year diet and they would not budge. I did the one year diet and all of their requirements and they still denied me because they said I didn't have enough diet documentation from the doctor. I ended up paying for the surgery myself through enstallments. Now, my insurance excludes this surgery totally.

Good luck

Diane Irwin <nashcat50us@...

Hi,
I'm new here but was told I needed to join. I went to the seminar on the 19th of Dec and they waited until after the first of the year to contract my insurance to see if the surgery would be approved. I got word that they do pay for it but I have to have a year of a doctors supervised weight loss program.
Now the problem, I have had back problems for years but last year my back started killing me like someone was putting a knife in my back and trying to break my back. I went to the Franklin Bone and Joint clinic and they did a MRI and it showed my last three disks gone/shot. I'm a walking time bomb for a disk to rupture and since it's were it's at it can't be fixed the only thing that will help as the doctor put it was to lose weight, fast and permanently. I can't walk to take off weight cause the left side of my back starts hurting about 10 mins after I start walking and faster if I'm carrying something. If I'm doing housework or bending my right side feels like it's going to break. The only thing I can do is sit!!
Has anyone had this problem and gotten approved for surgery???
I can't wait for a year to see if I lose wait and the fact that I can carry something while walking and my back starts to hurt almost immediately tells me any more weight on this back and it's going to break.
Need advice. Going to see my doctor on Monday, what do I tell her to get over this hurtle??

Welcome Liz....

2008-08-16 22:06:06

I am about to leave to take my car to the dealership, but I wanted to welcome you to this wonderful group! Please don't be hesistant to post...we CARE and we certainly CARE ABOUT YOU!

I , too, had Dr. H for my surgeon. My surgery was on 6/6/06. Now isn't that an interesting date for surgery???? Thankfully, it went well but I had additional surgery for an esophaseal hernia along with the bypass. It took about 4 1/2-5hrs and I was in the hospital 6 days. That was tons of fun....excuse the expression.

You are doing great with your weightloss!!! What a LOOOOSER you've become, Liz....keep it up! Pay attention to how you are feeling when you are eating....when you feel full...stop! Do not eat anymore =; We have to change our ways that have allowed us to get to the weight we were BEFORE our surgeries.

Take care...got to run and pick up my girlfriend. I think we'll do a little shopping while I am waiting for my car. I am in a size 14 now and it's nothing but exciting! I was a 22/24.

Keep posting....and remember the reunion on 3/24 and the retreat in July. We'd love to have you join us.

Hugs from Illinois,

Jilllllll

Re: protein drinks

2008-08-14 18:10:49

Amanda

I used the Magic Bullet and added 1 of the crystal light individual packets (like you add to bottled water). That gave some variety and the magic bullet really made a difference and I did better if I added ice for some of the water so it was very cold. If you doctor lets you think through a straw that helps with any taste factor.

I also mad sugar free jello and added the protein to the jello just be sure it has dissolved very well. I also added the choc to coffee and made a mocha drink. The vanilla worked with coffee (decaf) since I liked the cream in my coffee. If you do not have a bullet use a blender. But I tell you the bullet was a wonderful investment for me. I still use when I use powdered protein drinks.

Re: [CMC-WLS] uh oh!! I'm a'gonna be in trouble

2008-08-14 17:02:21

sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello are what get me through. Try to stick solely with the protein (meat, cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt) anything else CAN lead you to wanting more. Be sure not to drink before or after you eat. Boredom or Weight Gain, you just have to weigh these things. Try to make your chicken in a variety of ways. Bake it with all different seasonings, use a foreman grill, make it in a stir fry.....protein with a tiny little bit of veggies, be creative. They have these great packets of chicken, salmon, tuna, etc now by the canned tuna. They even have mussels in the packets. DO NOT GIVE IN TO THE HEAD HUNGER or you WILL be sunk. This is the voice of experience. I had 4 months of crazy eating and instead of being at my goal....I am 38 pounds out. I wanted to kick myself (when I finally came to my senses) BUT instead, I got back on a STRICT regimen that Dr. Dyer prescribed. 600-800 calories, 60-80 proteins, less than 15 carbs. Mine will be
higher because I am over a year out. My point, follow what the doctor gave you. Do not deviate!!!! IT IS DEATH!!!!! Use your tool. You are too important to let the head hunger, emotional eating, or even a craving to ruin what you are working hard to achieve. GOOD LUCK!

Re: goal weights?? crazy!

I strive for it, but I know I'll never be that small (I'm suppose to be
147) No one in my family has never been at the normal weight they're
suppose to be, I come from obesity...but I'm gonna get as close to it
as I can. I've always said that weighing less than 200lbs will be my
ultimate goal.. my thank you jesus, halleijuah goal. Anything else, is
just icing on the cake. I have about 16 more pounds to get there and
I'm 9 months out. Since I'm so close, I think I will aim for something
a little less... maybe 180. But, I'm just going to keep working my
tool, exercise, and try to make healthy food choices - that is the
hardest and just focus on being happier and healthier :-) Good luck to
you Kendra!

Just to let you know my thoughts on the $500 charge and why the CMC WL group is sooooo fortunate to have the leaders they do....
I went to a dr. in my area group and he saw me for 15 minutes for my initial surgery consultation and the charge was $265...Second opinion immediately came to mind so off I went to see Dr. Houston. He talked to me for over an hour if not 1 1/2 hrs. and his charge was $215.
That was my first HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Why they charge $500 is way beyond me. It's suppose to be for a lifetime of meeting visits. They do not have a Dr. Frye facilatating the meetings either! Second HMMMMMMMMMMMM. Remember the Christmas party we were able to attend for ZERO dollars? Each person here was charged $15....it's seems to be all about $$$$$$$$$. This is only my humble opinion. And the biggest problem I see here is many people don't have their surgery done laprsopically....another HMMMMMMMMMMM. And many end up in ICU....now that is the BIGGEST HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

That was my first HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Why they charge $500 is way beyond me. It's suppose to be for a lifetime of meeting s. They do not have a Dr. Frye facilatating the meetings either! Second HMMMMMMMMMMMM. Remember the wonderful Christmas party we were able to attend for ZERO dollars? Each person here was charged $15....it's seems to be all about $$$$$$$$$....sorry to say. This is only my humble opinion. And the biggest problem I see here is many people don't have their surgery done laproscopically....another HMMMMMMMMMMM. And 'many' end up in ICU with a large incision....now that is the BIGGEST HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. But if it works for them, who am I to say anything else. I just feel blessed again to have the sense to get a 2nd opinion and do my homework before I made my final decision for this surgery.
My biggest regret is that I don't live closer to Nashville so I can be a part of the meetings.

Why the $500 Charge???!!!

2008-08-09 11:33:45

Just to let you know my thoughts on the $500 charge to attend meetings in my area and why the CMC WL group is sooooo fortunate to have the leaders they do....

I went to a dr. in my area group and he saw me for 15 minutes for my initial life changing surgery consultation and the charge was $265...Second opinion immediately came to mind so off I went to see Dr. Houston. He talked to me for over an hour if not 1 1/2 hrs. and his charge was $215. That was a no brainer to me as he took the time to devote just to me and my concerns and his input. HELLO Dr. HOUSTON :* . It was good to be able to visit with you while I was in Nashville. I only wish I lived closer as I'd do more visiting and attending the group meetings. In our area, they you to pay $500 to attend their WS meetings on Mondays and the facilator is not a counselor like the CMC meetings.

Re: I was APPROVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2008-08-05 18:16:00

Hey Tammy,

You will just love Dr. Dyer. He is direct and wants to be sure you understand the surgery. And he wants you to do what he says! (He rolls his eyes with me sometimes) But he does have a sense of humor and is very kind and will not let you hurt post op! I asked everyone I knew about the right doctor to choose and I have a bunch of nurse friends who really liked Dr Dyer. He was very kind to my family (I have a family of nurses and therapists)and he answered every question and he came after surgery to the waiting room and talked to my family. He answers every question I have every time I go in. He can tell you how it is and when you need it he will take charge (I am a nurse too and he can handle me! Bless his heart). I was sick and I was not making good choices and he took charge and I got better and now I do what he says...well most of the time. LOL. He doesn't say always what you want to hear but what you need to hear. I would choose him again and again i have no doubt he
was the right choice for me. I agree with the others his wife is a doll and is very supportive of him and his practice. She really worked hard for the Obesity walk and I have seen her other times too. She seems like a true lady.

Just do what Dr Dyer says and you can be a "Diva by Dyer"!!!

I had surgery in August and I have lost about 56% of my excess weight. I can not begin to tell you how much better I feel and what a difference the surgery has made in my like. I remember my first meeting with Dr Dyer and he did not pull any punches with me either. He was very clear about the surgery. I would do it again tomorrow knowing what I know now. (even the mag citrate). Today I feel good, I have more energy, I can buy clothes that fit in a regular store. I have decreased the number of pills I take every day, I hope to get off CPAP soon, my BP is down, my sugars are within normal limits, I can get in the floor with my grandchildren and get back up too! LOL. My self esteem is so much better. My best advise for you is to do exactly what the doc says. Be religious about it. Your life depends on it! I know that everything Dr Dyer has told me has been for my own good and successful recovery. ( I am preaching to myself to). The first few days weeks months are sometime
challenging but as Susan Marie says "Nothing tastes as good as thin is going to feel"! And I am living breathing proof that is true.

Franny,

First, take a deep breath and calm yourself.

Now, If you are honestly eating and drinking exactly as you're supposed to and exercising, try not to freak out. Just keep doing exactly what the program says to do. From time to time your body will spin in neutral while it's trying to decide if you're really going to stick with the program. If you stay true and honest, then suddenly you'll start dropping again.

If you're weighing every day, STOP IT! You'll make yourself crazy. Pick one day a week and make that your weigh day. It's normal to have daily fluctuations. (especially if you retain fluid).

Thank you Tammy, I am just going off of my last visit where I was told by Dr.Dyer that he would have liked to see me at the 50% body fat loss & I wasn't there yet; I am still BARELY there I believe.(If I knew what my weight was & didn't fluxuate so much from day to day) But I know what you mean, I am happy that I have lost what I have lost so far; that is amazing to me. I've noticed that we all have a tendency to not be satisfied with how well we are doing. I know I'm bad about that.

We loose 100lbs, and after the initial excitement, we whine about the saggy skin, etc. I've done it. I still do it from time to time.

Cathy you are so funny! hahahaha, I am still doing my 50 a day, but just disappointed in MYSELF I guess because the weight either STAYS at a standstill or fluxuates TOOOOOO much for me, I just don't want Dr. Dyer to be upset or disappointed in me because I haven't lost the amount he would like to see me at.(can you tell that I like to try & please people) At the same time, I am happy that I am back to where I was 6 years ago though...thats a plus in my book!
